It was derby week for the AFL with 2 major clashes in the Sydney Swans vs GWS Giants and Brisbane Lions vs Gold Coast Suns.
At the SCG it was the Swans who claimed victory in a 14 point win in a tough contest. Tom Green from the Giants picked up 34 disposals followed closely by Finn Callaghan who picked up 33 disposals and 8 tackles.
In Brisbane the Lions continued their run of dominance with a 17 point win over state rivals in what was a low scoring game for both teams, final score being 66 – 49. The Q Clash brought some impressive displays with the Ashcroft brothers having a day out with a combined 63 disposals and bringing the Lions back to the top of the ladder.
In Victoria the Western Bulldogs had a mammoth win over Port Adelaide in Ballarat with a 90 point victory over the visitors. The win did spark some controversy with previous Dogs player Bailey Smith and current Dogs captain Marcus Bontempelli both taking some cheeky jabs at one another after Smith, now at Geelong, was asked about missing the club to which he made a comment about the small crowd of Footscray’s alternate home ground in Ballarat. The Bont was quick to comment saying ‘glad to see he is still thinking about us’. We wont hae to wait too long to watch these two go head to head as The Cats face The Doggies in 3 weeks time for what is set to be a Thursday night thriller.
It also would be a miss to not mention the Hawks celebrating their 100 year anniversary with a match up against the Richmond Tigers in front of a 65,000 strong crowd at the MCG. Past players from all 13 of the Hawks premierships were present to celebrate the milestone in which the brown and gold took home another win bringing them to 3rd on the ladder 8 rounds in to the season.
