AFL Recap – Panorama Week 4

This sports recap contains sensitive topics such as mental health.

This week was the first round of Sir Doug Nichols Round with plenty of big clashes providing some great entertainment over the weekend.

The round opened up in Darwin where the Gold Coast Suns defeated the Hawks an a close 8 point win. The Suns ran away with momentum in the first quarter and despite a push from the Hawks led in particular by the midfield in Jai Newcombe and forward line mosquitos Nick Watson and Jack Ginnivan who combined for 5 goals. The win now sees Gold Coast overtake the Hawks on the ladder going into round 11 holding 3rd place.

In contrast to the close Thursday night game there were some massive margin wins for both the Cats and Bulldogs. In Adelaide Geelong stunned Port with a 76 point win and in Melbourne the the Western Bulldogs displayed a dominant 91 point win over the Essendon Bombers. This match at Marvel Stadium also saw a record breaking moment for the Dogs as defender Bailey Dale racked up the most disposals ever for a Doggies player with a ridiculous 49 disposals.

To finish the round, there were some arguably dream wins for some bottom table teams. North Melbourne clutched a 4 point victory over the Tigers, the first time the Kangas have won at the MCG since 2017.

Up at the Gabba reigning premiers Brisbane Lions faced an 11 point defeat from the Demons, a shock up at their home ground. This loss coming after last weeks draw with the Kangas will hopefully see Brisbane take a step up in their game ahead of their clash with the Hawks in Melbourne.

The West Coast Eagles claimed their first win of the season at home ground Optus Stadium with a 28 point win over the Saints.

Next week, Sir Doug Nichols round continues with Dreamtime at the G on Friday night where Richmond will face Essendon.

This week also saw the tragic passing of Adam Selwood 4 months after his twin brother Troy. Adam, brother of Geelong legends Joel and Scott Selwood, was a premiership player, a member of the West Coast Eagles from 2003 to 2013. His passing has rocked the footy world and called for amplified discussions around mental health in the game. If you or someone you know is struggling dont be afraid to speak up or reach out for places of support.
