The Victorian Government announces free public transport for child myki holders in 2026 – Panorama Week 4

In a statement released on Sunday the 18th of May the Allan Labor Government released its plan for Free Public Transport for Child Myki Holders.

The Free Public Transport For Every Child, Every Day, Everywhere initiative, set to be enacted on New Years Day next year aims to act as future cost of living relief for families and students. Thats around 1 million people that the government estimates will save up to $755 a year per youth card holder.

So, what does this mean for the general public? Basically, anyone who holds a youth Myki thats under the age of 18 from 2026 onward will not have to pay to catch public transport.

With the expansion of the Metro Tunnel and growing regional commuters, this initiative will pair hand in hand with Victoria’s growing transport sector.

In the initiatives press release, Minister for Public Transport Gabrielle Williams stated “Cheaper school runs, cheaper weekends at the footy – and one less thing for families to worry about.” which is very promising to young Victorians.

The move is reported to cost just over $2 million dollars over the next 4 years and is a part of Premier Jacinta Allans “public transport blitz” which claims multiple massive infrastructure projects such as the transformation of Sunshine station into a PTV ‘superhub’ and further improvement to the Metro tunnel.
