The Nationals and the Liberal party have reunited after an 8 day split.
The initial separation, which we covered a few weeks ago on our show, was announced by leader of the Nationals David Littleproud who cited differences in key policies such as nuclear power and Regional Australia Future Fund as factors in the split.
Prior to the Nationals leaving the Coalition, new head of the Liberals Sussan Ley had made it clear that any policy discussions would be made with careful consideration as the party needed to undergo major reevaluation after its widespread loss in the 2025 Australian Federal Election.
On the 28th of May both party leaders announced the reunification with Sussan Ley thanking David Littleproud for the “respectful and productive” negotiation process. This process included both parties’ agreement towards a push to lift a ban on nuclear power, increasing supermarket competition and improvements to regional infrastructure.
Included in the reunification announcement was also the unveiling of the Coalition’s shadow cabinet in which elected members will oppose Labor ministers in the government. Senior Liberal member Angus Taylor who ran against Sussan Ley for party leadership maintains holding a ministerial role, however moves from Shadow Treasurer to Shadow Defence Minister.
Now, as the official Opposition to Anthony Albanese’s Labor Government, the Coalition has stated its goal to ‘hold the government accountable’ moving forward.
