Football Australia recently announced the appointment of Joe Montemurro as the next head coach of the CommBank Matildas, Australia’s Senior Women’s National Soccer Team.
Montemurro started his coaching career in his hometown of Melbourne where he worked with Melbourne Victory FC and Melbourne City FC in which he led the latter to an undefeated season and the A League Championship. His professional experience coaching women’s teams continued in Europe with Arsenal WFC, Juventus FC Women and Olympique Lyonnais Féminin all of which saw championship success in their respective leagues.
He was selected by a global search for a new coach after previous coach Tony Gustavasson’s contract was not renewed following the Matildas Paris Olympics run, in which they exited the competition in the group stage.
This new appointment comes at what is described by Football Australia Interim Chief Executive Officer, Heather Garriock, at a “critical time for Australian football” as multiple international tournaments including the FIFA Women’s World Cup Brazil 2027™ and the LA 2028™ Olympic Games land in the coaches 4 year cycle.
In his announcement posted June 2nd, Montemurro called his appointment as “the honour of a lifetime.”
He continued with the statement “This team means so much to so many Australians, and I’m humbled by the opportunity to help shape its next chapter. I’ve followed their incredible journey closely and am energised by the passion, resilience, and identity they’ve built.”
Joe Monetmurro’s first game leading as coach will be on the 26th of June as the Matildas play a friendly against Slovenia in Perth.
