Australian Sarah Snook among 2025 Tony Award winners – Panorama Week 7

In musical theatre news it was the night of nights for Broadway with the Tony awards taking place yesterday in Manhattan. 

Conducted by the American Theatre Wing and the Broadway League, the Tony awards recognise exceptional talent in musical theatre as is akin to the Oscars, Grammys and Emmy awards. 

This year, Australian Sarah Snook won the Tony for ‘Best Leading Actress’ for her role in The Picture of Dorian Gray in which Snook plays 26 parts with the assistance of prerecorded, projected video. 

‘Maybe Happy Ending’ won the most awards for the night with 6 wins from 10 nominations. Lead actor Darren Chris received his first Tony award for the show , the star rising to fame on hit show ‘Glee’. 

Other notable wins include Nicole Sherzinger taking home ‘Best Actress in a Musical’ in what was a stacked nominations list which included Aurda McDonald who holds the record for the most Tonys won in history. 

The show was hosted by Wicked and Broadway star Cynthia Erivo, a Tony award winner herself who amongst her hosting sang for the audience. Erivo will star as Wicked Witch of the West ‘Elphaba’ in ‘Wicked: For Good’, the sequel to last year’s blockbuster ‘Wicked’ alongside Ariana Grande and Johnathan Bailey. 

This years Tony’s also featured an exclusive performance by the Original Broadway Cast of hit musical ‘Hamilton’. Stars including Lin Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr, Renne Elise Goldsberry, Phillipa Soo and Johnathan Groff all graced the stage for a mashup of the show’s fan favourite numbers. Hamilton won 11 awards from its 16 nominations in 2016.
