PM Anthony Albanese gives address to National Press Club – Panorama Week 8

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese delivered a speech to the National Press Club last Tuesday outlining his policy plans for his next 3 years as leader.

The Prime Minister used the address to highlight how key policies introduced in the Federal Election will be enacted for the benefit of the Australian population and economy.

Mr Albanese opened with a comment on Australian values, stating that the Labor party’s win reflected the population voted for “fairness, aspiration and opportunity for all.”

The address continued with the mention of some of Labor’s key policies promised in the election, including support for Medicare, housing, renewable energy and education.

On education, the Prime Minister confirmed that when Parliament returns in July the first legislation to be introduced will be a 20% cut to student debt as a part of much needed cost of living relief. This debt cut will be backdated, meaning it will apply to the debt counted before indexation which took place on the 1st of June.

First home buyers will also find relief in the government’s ‘Five Per Cent Deposit Plan’ which will be applicable to all homes, metropolitan and regional, priced up to the average price and will include the government covering mortgage insurance.

Taking place from the 1st of January the cost of PBS medicine will be capped $25 per script, the lowest rate in over 20 years. This comes as a part of a major medical overhaul which includes the opening of 50 new Medicare Urgent Care Clinics and the development of the 1800 MEDICARE hotline will provide support to almost 20 million Australians.

In terms of renewable energy, the Prime Minister stated “We have legislated our 43 per cent emissions reduction target by 2030 and our commitment to Net Zero by 2050.” which he went on to elaborate involves investment in renewables backed by gas, batteries and hydro.

In the closing of his speech, the Prime Minister was positive in his belief in Australian values holding substantial power in creating success of his governments outlined policies.

“I am optimistic about the progress we can make, because there is substantial agreement on so many of the key priorities.” He spoke to the Press Club.
